Marcello

“And what exactly gives you the right to decide?”

“Mother, please,” Marcello said. “This is our queen.”

Marcello was something of an enigma; he was not a soul eater – he really was young, like the twenty-three years claimed on his birth certificate. What’s more it seems that he had spent the majority of his short life on Earth as a human. I’d never really heard the like of it before and I was sure that it was going to make for an interesting meeting.

In fact, both Marcello D'Amico and his mother Silvia were demons turned human about fifteen years earlier. We were talking in Haraak but both of them seemed perfectly happy to be using their human names.

“She’s an angel barely come to womanhood. Father has washed his hands of her and I see no reason to give her respect she has not earned.”

Silvia seemed very much the Italian matriarch and not at all interested in the possibility that anyone else could have power over her son. Particularly, I thought, another woman. I had called upon them in their townhouse just on the outskirts of Naples with high hopes of learning something actually useful but so far it had been all about Silvia.

“And just who decided she should be queen? Who? Perhaps I should declare myself queen. Or you should be king? Perhaps…”

“Perhaps you would like to leave us now?” I ventured and I used Voice in a way which left no doubt of my intent; some plaster trickled down off the ceiling after I had spoken.

“Oh,” she managed and looked a little stunned.

“Please, Silvia, why don’t you go and prepare us some refreshments while Marcello and I talk. I think you understand that I need to talk to your son now.”

“But I…you…”

“Because if you don’t I will decide here and now to favour Antonio in this matter.” I gave her a stare over my glasses. If that failed then I swear to you I was about to slip on my demon form and chase her from the room with my claws out. Some women!

Silvia’s bosom swelled and her face went a little pink under the layers of makeup.

“Thank you Silvia. I’m sure Marcello will fill you in later.”

“Well then,” she managed, putting some dignity together as she left the room. “I’ll organise some coffees.”

“My apologies My Queen. My mother can be a little over protective. She means well, you understand but we have had to come to turns with our position here, out abandonment if you will. The world has comparatively few like us and your arrival has shaken a rather precarious balance.”

“You were turned human as a boy and have grown up in Naples. Yet you seem more demon that your mother who, forgive me, has become something of a true mamma italiana.”

A faint smile played across Macello’s lips. “The mama from Hell I think.”

“Quite.”

“Overprotectiveness is a human trait that she has gained but she means well. It is my job now to look after her too. We all
